Cray Valley keep Welling out to win by the only goal

The Millers Ladies enjoyed their first match back, having last played at the beginning of December and that itself a lockdown friendly after their last official league game on the 1st November. Welling United provided excellent opposition and showed why they were top of Kent Division Two, having won all seven of their league games with a goal difference of +60 when the season was curtailed. Clearly they will be better matched in a higher division.

The Millers Ladies took the lead early on in the 7th minute, a long ball from Lauren Henry out wide into the penalty area towards Lucy Robertson, the ball fell free in the six yard box and Josie Elliott nipped in to poke the ball past the keeper. A real poachers goal and something The Millers have been missing in the past.

Eve Sales with a powerful shot forced the Welling keeper to make a fine save diving away to her left and tipping the ball around the post. Chances were few and far between after that although Welling came close when the cross bar was struck from a shot just outside the box. A cold day when the sun went behind the clouds and for a brief moment we were subjected to a short sharp snow shower during the first half before the sun again appeared.

The second half saw Welling pressing forward for an equaliser and again the woodwork came to the rescue at one point. However The Millers defended resolutely and will be pleased with the clean sheet to hold onto the early lead. Both teams utilised their subs and there was certainly no lack of effort from either side. It ended 1-0 to The Millers in this friendly fixture, good preparation for the Spring Round Robin starting next Sunday.

Millers Line Up: Saint, Henry, D'urso. Feagan, Morphitis, Jackson, Chenery, Blanche (capt), Robertson, Sales, Elliott. Subs used: (roll on, roll off) Knipe, Galea, Willicombe, Dodds

Goal: Josie Elliott 7 mins

The South East Counties Women’s League recently arranged an online meeting during which the clubs voted to curtail the league as clearly there were too many games left to complete. However the clubs did vote positively to a league proposal for mini groups of six clubs to be put in place with each team playing each other once. The Millers have been placed in group B of what is being called the Spring Round Robin. Fixtures have now been confirmed and the dates are given below.
