The Millers staged a second half comeback to see off the Rams and earn a place in the hat for the next round of the Emirates FA Cup. After early chances at both ends it was the Rams who dominated the first half, creating the most chances. After TJ Jadama and Kai Garrett had gone close, Mitch May forced Shaun Peart-Rowley in the Valley goal into making a terrific one-handed save diving low to his left on the half hour. May was not to be denied ten minutes later though, skilfully guiding home Garrett's low cross under pressure to give the home side the lead.

The visitors emerged after the interval a different side and turned the tie on its head during a four minute spell shortly after the second half began. Firstly on 53 minutes Harry Webster conceded a penalty with a push in the back on Dan Ajakaiye as he shaped to receive a long ball into the area from Barney Williams. Tom Beere converted from the spot. Four minutes later Luke Holness received a long pass out wide and did well to find Dan Ajakaiye in the box who initially with back to goal turned and finished well low in off the inside of the post from 12 yards.

Valley with fresh legs from the bench went close on a number of occasions as they looked to add a third, Kenny Aileru, Matty Vigor, Ibby Akbani and Fumnaya Shomotun all involved. The Rams finished strongly in the final minutes as they pushed forward for an equaliser but the Valley defence including new signing Marvel Ekpiteta and returning from injury Alex Kpakpe stood firm, to see out the game.
