Following Saturdays results, The Millers losing 2-1 at Chatham Town and VCD Athletic going down by the same scoreline at home to play off contenders Hythe Town this meeting takes on even greater importance.

For the Millers who have now slipped out of the play off places and sit 7th the situation is clear, two games left and two wins needed, nothing less will do if they are to clinch that elusive 5th place. It does though remain in their own hands with the final game Saturday at home to Sheppey United.

For the Vickers points are needed to lift themselves out of the relegation play off places where they currently sit in 17th on 37 points with two games to play. Their final game is away at East Grinstead. Exactly how many depends on other results. Haywards Heath Town are 18th on 36 points with one game to play. Burgess Hill Town are 16th on 38 points with two to play. Lancing 15th, East Grinstead Town 14th and Three Bridges 13th are also mathematically not out of the woods.

VCD Athletic FC is one of only a few clubs to have originated during the Great War when, in 1916 it was formed by workers employed at the Vickers armaments factory in Crayford

Vickers have been as high as second place over the course of the season and were in 7th place on the 19th November but since then just three wins against Ashford United home and away and Lancing at home has seen them tumble down the table. Grant Bassey the manager appointed in May 2022 departed in February this year, with his assistant Michael Power taking over and former Fisher manager Dean Harrison brought in to assist.

In the game between the two sides at Oakwood the first of 2023 on the 2nd January the Millers run out 4-0 winners with goals from Adam Coombes, Ade Adeyemo, Daniel Bennett and Denzel Gayle. Manager Tommy Osborne will know that result will count for nothing as both sides seek the points for different reasons at either end of the table.
