BIG MATCH PREVIEW
FOLKESTONE INVICTA v CRAY VALLEY (PM)
22nd FEB 2022
VELOCITY TROPHY – 4th ROUND
By Richard J Green
Valley take a break from their pursuit of league success with a return to Velocity Cup action on Tuesday.
Following wins against three North division sides in the previous rounds, Kevin Watson takes his team to Premier Division Folkestone Invicta with a prize in the quarter finals at stake.
Invicta currently sit just outside the playoff places after Saturday’s scheduled visit to Brightlingsea Regent fell victim to Storm Eunice – their last match resulting in a single goal win at the Buildkent Stadium against Cray Wanderers last Tuesday, courtesy of former Millers man Ade Yusuff’s 22nd goal of the season. Another member of the Invicta squad with recent Valley connections is Kieron McCann who made 12 appearances last season and was a member of our side that reached the first round proper of the FA Cup.
Now in his 25th season, Neil Cugley is the longest serving manager in the top seven tiers of English football having recently completed his 1250th match in the hotseat. Cugley lead Invicta to the Isthmian League South championship in 2015/16 by a staggering 24 points.
Currently in their sixth season in the Premier Division, Invicta have regularly featured in the promotion race, being beaten in the playoffs in 2017/18 and just missing out on the playoff places during the last completed season in 2018/19.
Watson will be keen to progress in the last remaining cup competition for Valley this season, but may be tempted to utilise his squad with one eye on Saturday’s mouth-watering league encounter at Ashford United
