BIG MATCH PREVIEW

ASHFORD UNITED v CRAY VALLEY (PM)
26th APRiL 2022
PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE – SOUTH EAST DIVISION
PLAYOFF SEMI-FINAL

By Richard J Green

It’s 2nd v 5th at Homelands on Tuesday evening as Valley take on Tommy Warrilow’s Ashford United as the promotion battle nears its climax.
Neither side can claim to be at peak form coming into this eagerly awaited contest - The Nuts & Bolts having suffered defeat to Faversham Town and Whitehawk in their last two games, while The Millers accrued just one point from their last four matches – after being in close pursuit of Champions Hastings United for much of the season.
For Valley, the playoffs represent previously unchartered territory, while Ashford United were involved as recently as 2018-19 – the last completed season prior to this. On that occasion, Warrilow’s men were 3-2 victors in an exciting semi-final at Hastings United before succumbing 2-1 in the final at Horsham.
Since the teams met at Homelands in February, Ashford have added much travelled striker Andrew Sesay and former Nuts & Bolts defender Mo Kamara to their squad but will be without former Herne Bay winger Adem Ramadan after he picked up a red card at Faversham Town last week.
For Valley, Chris Lewington returned from injury against Faversham Town on Saturday while Rory Hill reported “no reaction” to his knee injury following his 30 minute appearance.
This season’s league encounters resulted in honours being shared with Denzel Gayle’s strike winning the points for Valley at The Artic Stadium, before Ashford convincingly won the return two months ago.

If the scores are level after ninety minutes, half an hour extra time will be played before the possibility of the ultimate “gut wrencher” – a penalty shoot-out.
