EMIRATES FA CUP – PRELIMINARY ROUND
By Richard J Green
Next up on the road for Valley is a local trip to Chislehurst for what has been tagged the “Aviva 160 Bus Derby”, as we enter the world’s oldest and most famous knockout Cup competition on Saturday.
While for us it’s just the second week of the competitive season, the Foxes have now completed three matches in the SCEFL, suffering an opening day 1-3 defeat at Deal Town before beating Lordswood 4-1 on Saturday. They were last in action on Wednesday evening, conceding a 92nd minute equaliser to draw 2-2 at Phoenix Sports after Stefan Cox had put them 2-1 up late on.
Our hosts FA Cup campaign got under way in the Extra Preliminary Round two weeks ago with a 4-3 win against Holmesdale at Foxbury. A goal from Elliot Duncan gave Glebe a slender half-time lead before Lester Lawrence equalised for Dale just before the hour. With Jack Mahoney restoring Glebe’s lead, and Jaime Philpott doubling their advantage, the tie looked done and dusted as Holmesdale were reduced to 10 men after the dismissal of a centre back. Philpott made it 4-1 six minutes from time, before goals from Max Ash and a second from Lawrence set up a nail biting finish, although Glebe proved worthy winners in the end.
Missing from the Valley line-up will be Barney Wiliams who serves the first of a three match suspension following last week’s red card, while Anthony Edgar looks certain to be sidelined after suffering a knee injury towards the end of Tuesday night’s win against East Grinstead Town.
One welcome addition to the Millers’ ranks is likely to be Trey Williams – his international clearance now having been ratified by the FA.
Valley will be looking to rekindle memories of our famous run to the First Round Proper in 2020/21 and an appearance on the BBC Red Button no less, while the Foxes competition “best” is a 2nd Round Qualifying appearance in 2017/18 – losing to Phoenix Sports in a replay.
And in a welcome return to pre-pandamic Cup days, should a replay be required it will take place at The Artic Stadium next Tuesday, 23rd August at 7.45pm.
So dust off those old rattles and Cup rosettes, and get yourself along to Foxbury on Saturday for some good old Cup football.
See you there…………..
