Match Preview - London Senior Cup
The London Senior Cup was first contested in 1882/83 and the winners were Upton Park. Last season saw Hanwell Town beat Brentford B in the final after Charlton Athletic Reserves had won the cup the previous two seasons. Welling United were winners in 2018/19 having also won in 1989/90. We of course have had our own success in the competition and under James Collins were at the time the lowest ranked side (step 5) to win beating Metropolitan Police 2-1 in the final played at Dulwich Hamlet in 2016/17. The following year under Kevin Watson we also reached the final but were beaten 4-1 by Balham at Hendon FC. Incidentally looking back at the line-ups Denzel Gayle played in both those finals and Cem Tumkaya in the second.
We have met our opponents today three times previously in the London Senior Cup, twice at Park View Road winning 5-4 in 2013/14 and 3-1 in 2016/17. The most recent meeting was at the Artic Stadium in 2022/23 the visitors winning 1-0.
Tonight presents an opportunity for some of the young players to gain experience and I am sure both managers will utilise their squads accordingly.
