RICAY' ROCK THE MILLERS!

PITCHING-IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
BILLERICAY TOWN 2 CRAY VALLEY (PM) 1 - 1 FEB 2025 - ATT 1,064
Goals: BT - Williams 29, Akinwande 34
CV - Beere 45+2

The Blues edged the Millers to take the three points in an enthralling encounter. After a cagey start the game burst into life with the Blues scoring twice in five minutes around the half hour mark. Bradley Williams opening the scoring unleashing a shot from 25 yards out that deceived keeper Harrison Chamberlain and dipped late on to go in off the underside for the cross bar. Femi Akinwande added a second shortly after from inside the box. Valley hit back Adam Coombes's free kick was parried away by keeper Sam Donkin and Kiki Oshilaja went close with the rebound. With moments remaining in the first half Tom Beere pulled a goal back with a well executed volley from just outside the box.

This set up an intriguing battle after the interval, Valley dominating the early period in particular but despite chances were unable to find that elusive equaliser. The Blues remained a threat and had chances themselves, Chamberlain making an outstanding one handed block to prevent them increasing their lead the pick. There was confusion at the end with Danny Waldren, who had been substituted on the hour mark, shown a red card after the final whistle as the teams left the field.

Despite the defeat the Millers remain very much in the pack and next up is the re-arranged home against Lewes on Tuesday evening with free entry for all.

Guest Match Report By Preston Willott - Cray Valley (PM) Supporter

Ricay’ Rock The Millers!
Billericay Town 2 Cray Valley (PM) 1
Entry : £13
Programme : £3 ( included free hot drink !! )

This eagerly anticipated clash between 2 sides harbouring thoughts of the Isthmian Premier Championship title served up a feast of exciting football that saw the Essex side prevail on a cold grey February afternoon,
My satnavless world was given a little challenge on this one, one which I actually quite enjoyed ; having found the Dartford Crossing pleasingly free flowing , I then made a boo-boo on the lanes off the A127 and got the wrong side of Great Bursted ; a hamlet so 'great' that I'd dread to think what could possibly constitute a 'Little Bursted' , but having put myself right I soon approached Billericay from the south and saw the floodlights of the ground and braved the almost lunar landscape of the club car park.
I have to say, car park aside, Billericay is by far the best ground I've been to this season on my journeys cheering on Steve Mckimm's Green and Black Army, and not only does it boast good facilities, I found the club staff at and near the turnstiles very welcoming, and the home supporters friendly and open for a chat in the clubhouse before the game.
The ground has 2 good sized covered terraces behind each goal, and a main seated stand ( with a cracking mural on the back of it ) that runs about two-thirds of the way along the pitch flanked by the clubhouse and bar, and opposite that is a smaller all seated stand that runs the full length of the pitch. The ground also gives of an air of being clean, well maintained and well cared for by its people
Cheeseburger and Chips ( £8 ) inside, we watched the opening exchanges eagerly as both sides sought to seek out any weaknesses and it was clear early on that the home side were in no way abashed from the recent 4 - 0 defeat at Dartford as their wing backs were giving absolutely nothing away and it was going to be very difficult to get much past them ; and on the odd occasion we did there was always a Billericay centre back in the right place to mop up the danger. We knew this was going to be a really stern test now !
On the half-hour mark , that test was toughened as we conceded a goal ............ but I can't say too much about it as I was fiddling with gloves and hat at the time ; heard the cheer and looked up and thought .... well ..... I'd probably better not type what I actually thought at that moment !!!!!
In the ascendancy following their opening goal, Billericay excelled and really started to turn the screw a little, and we looked a little bullied off the ball somewhat and looked all at sea for a good 5 minutes or so but we weathered the storm and pressed forward with probably our best move of the game thus far ; only for Billericay to counter and after a pretty mesmerizing piece of football switching from one wing to the other Ferni Akinwande made it 2 - 0
A fantastic reflex save from Chamberlain in the Millers goal some 3 or 4 minutes later kept it at 2 - 0 , and that at the time felt like a crucial incident in the match as to have conceded a third against a side like this would have probably put the game out of reach. That feeling was magnified when barely 2 minutes later on the cusp of half-time , Tom Beere lashed in a beautiful volley that stunned the home crowd into silence and what was nearly 3 - 0 was now actually 2 -1
The second half saw the brief period of watery winter sunshine forego its feeble foray through clouds, and the Millers came out in a much more determined physical mode ; clearly trying to get a bit closer to the opponent , and I'm sure I wasn't the only one convinced we'd get back on level terms sooner or later but it just wasn't to be this afternoon unfortunately ; the closest we came was birthday boy Danny Waldren's header beating the 'keeper ........ but not the post !!!
It wasn't all one way traffic in the second half though ; Billericay still had the ability to counter with venom, but our defence and Chamberlain's agility in between the sticks meant they couldn't add to their tally either
Hence when the 4th official indicated a 6 minute add-on at the end of the game, it was still in the balance , but try as we might, we just couldn't get that equalising goal.
No complaints, we gave it our all, but this afternoon Billericay over the 90 were just that little bit stronger than us. The lads came over and thanked the visiting support, which is always a much appreciated gesture from the players. And so thoughts turn quickly to Tuesdays's encounter at home against Lewes
C'mon the Millers!
