MILLERS BACK ON TRACK AS SCHOLARS GIVEN A LESSON IN FINISHING

PITCHING-IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
POTTERS BAR TOWN 0 CRAY VALLEY (PM) 2- 8 MARCH 2025 - ATT 141
Goals: CV - Oshilaja 68, Beere 84

The Millers earned their first win since 25th January at the seventh attempt. Two second half goals, a scrambled opener from captain Kiki Oshilaja poking home from close range following a corner and an excellent finish from Tom Beere after receiving a pass from Barney Williams secured all three points. Harrison Chamberlain in the Millers goal made crucial saves to ensure the clean sheet, first while the score was still goalless and then again low down at the foot of his post as the game entered stoppage time. Dan Bowry saw red for a second yellow late on but the Millers ensured they returned to South East London with all three points.

The Scholars v The Millers
Isthmian Premier Division
Att : 141

A week that started with clear but chilly weather morphed into a weekend that saw both the hottest day of the year thus far and a welcome return to winning ways for Steve Mckimm's lads as they traveled to The Scholars temporary digs at Kings Langley FC
After a minute's silence to honour the young girl tragically killed in a freak accident on a football pitch in Cumbria during the week, the game got underway in brilliant sunshine as both sides looked to gain an early ascendancy. To merely say that neither side managed to do so and that it was a deserved 0-0 at half time would be a a disservice to the 45 minutes of quite intriguing football that was served up before the interval. Both sides were looking to play the ball on the deck and pass to feet, but equally minded to be resolute in disrupting the opposition when not in possession and an almost chess-like game of attempted attacking play that never quite really troubled either goalkeeper significantly was nonetheless an absorbing contest.
At one point the hosts thought they'd taken the lead only to be denied by an offside flag, and later on they rather fortuitously had a free-kick in a very promising position for which Barney Williams was very harshly booked , given that from where I was it seemed he'd made a fair tackle and won the ball quite cleanly
The travelling Millers supporters trotted around to the opposite end of the ground at the interval , and in between the distraction of watching colourful container trains on the nearby West Coast Main Line were treated to more absorbing football. There was some great passing moves attempted from the Millers that didn't quite come off, but I really felt the game had a goal in it somewhere, and it would merely take one moment of quality to unlock the scoring
Now I can't speak for anyone else , but my cautious optimism that we'd get a positive result out of the game was fuelled as the gaffer made some changes during the second half, and the introduction of Clement Asiedu , Michael Ademiluyi, Adam Coombes and our talisman Denzel Gayle injected more impetus into the Millers tempo and I felt that that we were ever more likely to be the side that got that solitary goal
In the event , my hunches proved inaccurate ; it wasn't going to finish with a solitary goal, and the opening goal was not so much a piece of quality as a touch of ruthlessness from Kiki Oshilaja on 68 minutes to stab home a loose ball to get our noses in front
As sun sank lower and the temperatures noticeably dropped, any Millers fans who were also railway connoisseurs were treated to two golden moments as firstly a pair of elderly Type 90 electric locomotives whined northwards at the helm of a lengthy container train before Tom Beere beat first the defender and then the 'keeper with a precise drive into the far corner with only 6 minutes left of the 90 to play.
There was delight aplenty with that second goal amongst the travelling support as the 2 goal cushion gave everyone a sense of belief that we really would push on over the finish line to take the 3 points home after a lean February, and even a second yellow card for Dan Bowry didn't dampen the mood as we saw the game out with 10 men
Attitude and determination alone won't win you games in any league ; but I've always maintained if you're doing the basics right and keep plugging away, you'll get rewards sooner or later, and so was proven today, and the 3 points will hopefully really put smiles back on all the players faces around the Artic ; and they really deserve to smile as to be sitting in 4th place in our first ever season in the Isthmian Premier as we settle into the month of March is a fantastic achievement and a place in the play-offs remains firmly ours to cement. #COYM
