13. FA VASE 2018/19

Sunday 19 May 2019
The Buildbase FA Vase Final at Wembley Stadium connected by EE

Chertsey Town 3 v Cray Valley (PM) 1 (after extra time)
Goals: CT- Sam Flegg 39, Jake Baxter 105 (pen), Quincy Rowe 117
CV- Gavin Tomlin 36

Attendance: 42, 962 (includes FA Trophy Final Leyton Orient v AFC Flyde which followed)

The two teams, who both won their respective leagues this season, couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes following a tight, competitive and entertaining encounter in which Cray took a first-half lead before the Curfews bounced back.
And it was joy for Chertsey boss Dave Anderson, having come out of retirement to take the job on this season, as two goals in extra time from Jake Baxter and the impressive Quincy Rowe were enough to take the Vase to the Surrey club for the first time.
In truth, there was little to pick between the two teams throughout and it was a tight opening to the game, although Cray Valley keeper Andy Walker had to make a full-stretch save to deny Lubo Guentchev’s curling free-kick on the half-hour mark.
It sprung into life shortly after that, when Mason Welch-Turner’s searching pass into the left-hand channel was picked up by Gavin Tomlin. The Cray striker shrugged off the challenge of Sam Flegg before planting a low shot past Nick Jupp at his near post.
Chertsey weren’t behind for long though, drawing level less than three minutes later with Flegg smashing home from close range after his header from Guentchev’s corner had bounced back off the post. It was proving just as close a contest after the break, with the teams seemingly cancelling each other out with defences on top and restricting chances to a minimum.
With the game in stoppage time and extra time minutes away, Chertsey had the chance to win it as Guentchev scampered into the box from the left before picking out Michael Peacock unmarked in the box. Unfortunately for the Curfews, the central defender mis-hit his shot well off target.
And it was then Cray’s turn to almost nick victory, as Anthony Edgar’s left-footer cannoned back off the crossbar with what was the last kick of the 90 minutes. And that will no doubt be the moment the men from Kent will look back on as they make the journey back across London.
Chertsey edged ahead for the first time at the end of the first half of extra time, when Guentchev was felled by a committed Cem Tumkaya tackle right on the line of the area. Jake Baxter scored with the penalty. As Cray Valley pushed forward in search of an equaliser Quincy Rowe made the game safe on the break with three minutes remaining.

Matchday programme player profiles for the Millers were provided by club captain and goalkeeper Andy Walker to add a bit of fun and humour.

Andy Walker: I'm the dad of the group. When the music goes on I don't know half of the songs that are playing and I moan about how loud it is and they'll say, :shut up dad".
Brad Potter: Brad scored a couple of goals at the end of the season. His favourite saying is, "Just stick it in an area, that's all I ask". When we have done that he has come up with the goods.
Danny Smith: Great lad. Liverpudlian and we can't get him out of the clubhouse most of the time. He's just had a baby too, so he's getting into a lot of trouble for being in there.
Liam Hickey: Hick is the social director. He arrives in a lovely mercedes but he never seems to work, as every time I speak to him he's on the golf course, so I'm not exactly sure what else he does.
Ashley Sains: His good lady goes everywhere with him and we were expecting her to make an appearance on the pitch at some point, but she hasn't yet. Wembley could be her debut!
Cem Tumkaya: If he wants something done, he'll send his staff to do it. We sometimes have trouble getting him into kit because he's used to having someone else dress him.
Anthony Edgar: Great player and a magician in the middle of the park, pulling strings and always seems to deliver. He's a sensitive lad and definitely a danger man today.
Paul Semakula: Paul is the most intelligent one in the team, he cracks jokes that most of us don't understand but he's brilliant both on and off the pitch.
Gavin Tomlin: I call Gav 'Denzel Washington' he's a dead ringer for him. He says he's the boss at home and because I haven't seen his other half, I have to believe it. When I see her, I'll get the truth.
Kevin Lisbie: Just an absolute dream. What he's achieved only comes second in respect to what a fella he is. And he's older than me so any time he's about, it means I'm not the team OAP.
Ryan Flack : Another magician, and he always brings his family to the game. When he scored the goal in the first leg of the semi-final he ran straight over to them which was lovely.
Tyler Myers: A very quiet lad, but when he's come in he's been absolutely fantastic. It's taken a squad to get to where we are and he's a massive part of that. He has a good future ahead of him.
Josh James: I travel in with Josh, especially if we've got a long away journey to do. A few of the lads have said he's funny but he's not he's actually pretty boring.
Deren Ibrahim: I'm not going to say Del is No 2 because he's a hell of a goalkeeper. I can't speak highly enough of him. He came in for the second leg to help us get to Wembley.
Denzel Gayle: Denzel is absolutely crazy; he loves dance in the changing room. He's either really happy or really down, sometimes he won't say a word, but on match day we can't shut him up!
Francis Babalola: A nice fella, Apparently our gaffer taught him at school, but Kev might be in on the conspiracy too because Babs says he's in his 20's but he must be in his 40's.
Joe N'Guessan: He's a great talent and he was causing havoc earlier in the season but unfortunately he picked up an injury. He's flying to Turkey for an op, so we joke he's getting a holiday out of it.
Lea Dawson: Daws has not been at the club for too long. He's had to drop down a level but he's had a big impact. He's pretty quiet but he's a strong, battling lad and the fighter in the team.
Callum Willock: Cal is quiet but he's had a phenomenal career. Though he can't stay on his feet - he's scored about four or five goals this season from the floor, it looks like he's on ice skates.

History Insight:
The team stayed at The Holiday Inn London West on the Saturday evening prior to the match utilising Andersons Travel to arrive by coach at Wembley Stadium on the Sunday morning for the 12.15pm kick off. Cray Valley (PM) were allocated 22 places in the Wembley Suite & Royal Box, for the committee and guests. These included 4 seats in the front row and 10 on the second row.

History Insight:
The local interest in the FA Vase as the reality of playing at Wembley grew closer was enhanced when the Millers U23 Development Manager Marc Mortlock arranged for billboards to be placed at a few local road side sites advertising both the semi-final and final of the competition. There were various designs and it certainly helped to raise the club's profile. One was sited at Crittalls Corner near Sidcup and St Pauls Cray on the A20 close to the site of the original mill and ground.

The Millers started their run to the Final of the FA Vase at the London Hire Stadium in Hextable against SCEFL First Division side Sutton Athletic, who pushed the Millers all the way in this First Qualifying Round tie. Francis Babalola put the Millers in front after 29 minutes but the Sutts deservedly equalised just 2 minutes before the break through James Sutherland. A nervy looking Millers side managed to keep out a confident looking home side before Babalola grabbed his second of the afternoon with a little over 20 minutes remaining. The Millers had to survive some late scares from a hard working Athletic team but they eventually secured their place in the Second Qualifying Round and a home tie against Hailsham Town.

Josh James who scored the opening goal in action v Hailsham Town.

Four days after beating Ryman Premier League side Merstham on penalties in an Emirates FA Cup replay, the Millers faced Southern Combination side Hailsham Town. The game was a little after the Lord Mayors's show following their midweek heroics and whilst the Millers were very comfortable throughout the game, it never really completely came alive. The opening goal came after a period of pressure, when Hailsham failed to close down midfielder Josh James and his low drive from 20 yards had too much on it for the keeper and it nestled in the bottom corner in the 13th minute. The game was finally put to bed in the 80th minute when hard working Francis Babalola latched onto a ball over the top and coolly rounded the visitors keeper and made it 2-0.

Ashley Sains put the Millers ahead after 26 minutes before the Saints equalised through Noyan Tajbakhsh, midway though the second half. But the Millers eventually eased through with late goals from Anthony Edgar (79) and Joe N'Guessan (84).

Hat trick man Kevin Lisbie evades the attention of Badshot Lea defenders.

Cray Valley's ball retention on the deck was of the highest quality and Badshot Lea couldn't live with them, but it took Kevin Watson's men 36 minutes to break the deadlock, courtesy of Denzel Gayle's directed drive. Badshot Lea capitulated during the second half as Cray Valley scored six goals inside a clinical final 23 minutes. During that time Kevin Lisbie scored a hat-trick in 22 minutes to take his goalscoring tally for the season to 16. Gayle aded another to take his tally up to nine for the season, while Callum Willock came off the bench to score his first of the season and Joe N'Guessan capped an impressive display by scoring the seventh of the game and his sixth goal for the season.

Kevin Lisbie sends the keeper the wrong way as he scores the 56th minute penalty to put the Millers back in front.

The Millers booked their place in the last 4 of the FA Vase thanks to an amazing win at Willand Rovers on a pitch with a fair covering of sand. The Millers went ahead on 32 minutes as Gavin Tomlin fired home before the hosts levelled seven minutes later as Ryan Guppy headed in. But cometh the hour, cometh the man as Kevin Lisbie showed his quality to win the match by firstly slotting home from the penalty spot after 56 minutes, before wrapping the game up in added time, calmly rolling the ball past the keeper on the break.
