PENALTY JOY FOR YOUNG MILLERS

Aiden Wicks the young Millers goalkeeper was the hero as he saved all four of the Bridges penalties in the shoot out to clinch a semi-final place in the Isthmian Youth Cup. However in an excellent entertaining game which ended 3-3 after 90 minutes it was football that was the winner with both sides deserving credit for their performances.
The Bridges took the lead early on, a fine finish from Alex Kaye from just outside the box after the ball broke to him following a slight mix up between defender and keeper. The Bridges were on top early on but the Millers were creating chances as they gradually grew into the game and although they remained behind at the interval they were clearly not out of it.
The equaliser came in the 59th minute through Jonathan Lawson. The Millers were in the ascendancy now and Riley Woods went close followed by another close effort from Malachy Turner after a good ball in from Victor Damyonov.
However it was the Bridges who regained the lead in the 79th minute Elliott Hanslow escaping through midfield before firing low in the corner. Three minutes later the Millers were back level, Will Abiola rising high from a corner kick to head powerfully home.
The Millers looked to have won it in the 87th minute when Liam Hutchings scored from the penalty spot after a foul just inside the area. With the clock ticking down Bridges were themselves awarded a penalty in the final minute which was duly despatched by Yasmin Ainine to make the score 3-3 at full time.
The penalty shootout to decide who goes through was won by the Millers 2-0 with Aiden Wicks saving all four of the Bridges penalties after the Millers had scored their opening two before seeing their third saved by the Bridges keeper George Mead.
Good Luck to Three Bridges Under 18s who will be disappointed with tonight's result but were fully involved in a wonderful match here in SE9. But the lottery that is a penalty shootout results in the Millers taking a spot in the semi-finals!

ALL SQUARE IN LOCAL DERBY

The 'Aviva 160 Bus Derby" between the young Millers and local rivals Glebe ended all square at one goal each in this U18 Isthmian Youth East Division fixture.
Both keepers were called into action in the opening period. The excellent Glebe keeper first saving low to his right from a Dexter Gilchrist shot and then tipping over a shot from Arinze Chukwujekwu in a central position after receiving a pass inside from the right flank by Victor Damyonov. At the other end Aidan Woods was also forced to tip a fine shot over the top and away for a corner. Glebe struck a post before the deadlock was finally broken on the stroke of half time, a corner led to a shot being saved by Woods, however his second attempt from the rebound was adjudged to have crossed the line.
Graham Knight the young Millers manager felt his side were not at their best and felt a bit leggy at times. A tough school game the day before may have been a factor. They huffed a puffed in the second half without really troubling the visitors goal until five minutes from time when Jonathan Lawson broke through the centre of the Glebe defence, rounded the keeper and fired home the equaliser. The young Millers then seemed to come alive and started to threaten as looked for the winner, Alex Jones going close with a couple of late efforts but it remained 1-1 at the end.

PENALTY SHOOTOUT HEARTBREAK FOR YOUNG MILLERS

Heartbreak for the Young Millers as their league cup campaign came to an end at the semi final stage when they lost 5-3 on penalties after the tie finished 1-1 after 90 minutes against Woking Academy, the game being played at Knaphill FC. In the end the young Millers fell just short but held the upper hand for long periods in the second half. Stoic defending and a bit of luck saw Woking through. They will meet Metropolitan Police in the final on 17th April at South Park FC.
Graham Knight the Millers manager said he was proud of the boys and couldn't fault their efforts, he felt they played well and certainly created enough chances. The problem though was in not taking advantage of those chances and perhaps in not getting the rub of the green on a couple of occasions.
Both keepers were called into action early on, Cray keeper Aidan Wicks making a save and then at the other end Marco Underwood saving from Victor Damyonov. Woking took the lead in the 33rd minute. Shortly after the Woking keeper received a yellow card, hauling down Damyonov after missing his clearance near to the corner flag as they both contested Malachi Turner's through ball. A key moment of the game followed as half time approached, keeper Underwood receiving a second yellow and red card after he brought down Arinze Chukwujekwu some 30 yards out as he chased down Damyonov ball over the top. Woking brought on their U16 keeper Louie Sullivan but were forced to play the entire second half down to ten men.
After Wicks was forced into a save at the feet of a breaking striker, Jonathan Lawson set up Chukwujekwu but with just the keeper to beat, fired over the top. The equaliser did come though on 56 minutes, Damyonov's cross was deflected into the path of Lawson who drilled the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards.
The young Millers went in search of a second goal and enjoyed plenty of possession but the home side defended resolutely. Lawson saw a shot go narrowly wide and in the 73rd minute Cray had the ball in the net following a corner but the referee spotted an infringement and ruled it out. Pressure mounted and it was desperate at times at the back for Woking, with the clock ticking down Lawson broke into the box and saw his angled shot come back off the inside of the post. It finished 1-1 at 90 mins meaning the tie would be decided by a penalty shoot out.
Woking were first up and scored as were the next six penalties to leave Woking ahead 4-3. The eighth penalty was saved and then Woking scored their fifth to triumph 5-3 on penalties.

LAWSON HAT TRICK SECURES COMEBACK WIN FOR YOUNG MILLERS

Following the disappointment of Thursday's penalty shootout exit in the league cup against Woking, the young Millers returned to league action on Monday evening. Cray in second place in the U18 Isthmian Youth Division travelled to Holm Park to face third placed Sheppey United.
Cray showed great bouncebackability to overcome a 2-1 deficit at half time and win the game 3-2 with a Jonathan Lawson hat trick. Cray opened the scoring slightly against the run of play in the 23rd minute, Lawson won the ball just inside the Sheppey half, played a one-two with Alex Jones before breaking through the heart of the home defence and slotting home past the keeper from ten yards out.
In the 33rd minute Sheppey drew level, a deep corner partially cleared to the edge of the box where a Sheppey shot deflected past Aidan Wicks in the Cray goal. This was followed two minutes later by a quick fire second as a shot was scrambled home to give Sheppey a 2-1 lead going into half time.
Cray started the second half positively and got their reward as Lawson grabbed his second of the game turning home Arise Chukwujekwu's low driven cross from close in to equalise. With both teams looking for the winner as the game opened up, chances were spurned at both ends. The deciding goal came in the 83rd minute, a quick free kick found Victor Damyonov down the righty, his pass sent Lawson through to slot the ball home from an acute angle to complete his hat trick.
A hard earned but deserved win for Cray against a resolute and hard working home team. Graham Knight the Cray U18 manager said after the game "very much a game of two halves, we were poor first half but improved significantly in the second".

YOUNG MILLERS SECURE POINT FOR TITLE
A hard fought 2-2 draw tonight at the Artic Stadium against Maidstone United U18 but the point was enough for the young Milllers to secure the Isthmian Youth East Divisional Title. The point also means the Stones can finish as runners up on goal difference if they beat Sutton Common Rovers in their final game.
In an opening half of few chances despite both sides playing open expansive football it was Valley who went ahead on the stroke of half time, Victor Damyonov getting to the byline and his cross was volleyed home at the far post by Oliver Knight, his shot going in off the inside of the post.
Second half and the Stones kicking towards the quarry end pressed for an equaliser, Aiden Woods in the Valley goal made a good save to keep Valley in front but was beaten in the 85th minute when Stones levelled. A cross cum shot from Barnaby Richard sailing into the far side of the goal. In a rare second half attack Valley looked to have won the game in added time. Jonathan Lawson did well to hold the ball up and with the bench screaming to take the ball into the corner, he broke forward and set up Obi Igwe to slot home to take a 2-1 lead. However there was still time for the Stones to grab a deserved equaliser, a scramble in the area following a corner saw the ball slammed home from close range by Barnaby Richard for his second of the match.

YOUNG MILLERS WIN CHAMPIONS OF CHAMPIONS TROPHY

A fantastic result for the young Millers as they triumph on a wet evening at the Bedfont Sports Recreation Ground beating Worthing U18s 4-0 in the Isthmian Youth League Champion of Champions Cup Final to lift the trophy.
An excellent game of football and a credit to both sides , Valley manager Graham Knight was pleased with his sides performance which put the icing on the cake for what has been a both a successful and most enjoyable season for his young team.
Valley took the lead in the fourth minute when Mal Turner fired home a shot from twenty yards. The lead was doubled twenty minutes later, Victor Damyonov's corner kick to the far post was headed back across the face of the goal by Riley Woods and Alex Jones had the simple task of heading home. Cray had dominated the opening stages but Worthing nicknamed the Rebels showed that they were very much still in the game and towards the end of an entertaining first half, Valley keeper Aidan Wicks managed to keep his clean sheet intact when he blocked Brad Dologhan's close range effort.
The opening ten minutes or so of the second half saw the Rebels force Valley onto the back foot and a few people were scratching their heads to the fact that they hadn't pulled a goal back. On the break though Valley went close, Johnny Lawson's effort blocked after being set up by Damyonov. On 65 minutes Valley faced an indirect free kick which they lined up to defend on the six yard line, the ball was blocked and from the breakaway Lawson slotted home at the other end from close in to make it 3-0. The Rebels continued to push forward and Valley were forced to defend some constant pressure. Valley had created chances throughout the evening and with five minutes remaining a mix up in the Rebels defence allowed Lawson to pounce and lob the ball over the keeper for his 28th goal of the season and wrap up the cup final at 4-0.
So along with the Isthmian Youth East Division title the young Millers added the Champion of Champions Trophy which was proudly held aloft at the presentation ceremony at the end of the game. Isthmian League Chairman Nick Robinson presented the players along with managers Graham Knight and Barney Sullivan with their winning medals.

Footnote: Congratulations and well done to all the players who with one exception are all first year under 18's and therefore eligible to attempt to defend their title next season. The one exception is second year centre back Will Abiola, deservedly made captain for his final game with the team. We warmly thank him for his efforts and wish him well and every success for the future.
