Cray Valley PM vs Dulwich Hamlet
On Thursday 12th July I took in my first pre-season game of the 2012/13 season at Middle Park Avenue, Eltham, SE9 with the game being played at the old badger sports ground that is now the home to Cray Valley Paper Mills FC.

Their opponents were Dulwich Hamlet and this game was chosen as the match to officially open the new floodlights that have been installed at this Kent Hurlimann League club, however due to a huge downpour that started late afternoon the game was moved to the pitch behind the main pitch as the main pitch was waterlogged....

....I have been here before a few years back when I played in a summer 5 a side tournament and the ground has changed completely. There is a sparking new large club house & dressing rooms, a railed off pitch complete with 2 covered stands opposite each other. It's a really decent looking Kent County league set up and there is obviously money going into the club. There was a funeral reception going on in the main bar (but to be honest it was more like a party than a funeral), so the committee bar was open to all and what a nice bar it is, full of signed photo's and memorabilia from sports stars from yesteryear and last season's signed Millwall squad photo.....

.... The hosts took to the weather much better than Dulwich and were quickest to the ball and stronger in the challenge. the game ebbed and flowed with Cray Valley gradually getting on top and deservedly taking the lead after a long shot was fired in hard and low from the left that the trailist keeper (Albanian I believe) got down well to save before palming it into the path of an on rushing player who duly tapped it into the empty net. A few minutes later and just before half time they should of had a 2nd but the home player missed the goal when it looked easier to score after being put through. As the rain continued to fall the ref blew he's whistle for half time.

A quick turn around by both teams caught a lot of the supporters out as they headed to the bar to seek some comfort from the never ending rain, myself included. When I reappeared Dulwich had leaked 2 more goals as well as scoring 1 to make it 3-1. The rain continued, a few subs were made to make a total of 4 Dulwich first teamers on the pitch at the end of the game which ended 3-1 to Cray Valley.

After retiring again to the bar area for a few more beers it was finally time to leave for home ..... All in all I was impressed with the set up that Cray Valley now have .....

History insight:
The following is a response from club secretary at the time Dave Wilson to a ground article which had appeared online.
dave said, on August 2, 2012 at 5:27 pm
"Hi I have only just read your “The Ball is Square” and maybe by now you have been back to the ground. Just to put the record straight the ground was formerly Middle Park Palace Sports and Social Club.
The club was at one stage owned by Chris Badger hence the name Badgers, as most locals knew the place as Badgers.
Cray Valley FC PM have been at home here for about 10 years. In that time they have had lots of success in the Kent County league and various cups including the London Cup, but the facilities were not up to the standard of the Kent League
The club were invited to the Kent league for 2011/2012 under the proviso that we made the upgrades to the ground which included floodlights and a 100 seater stand during the season. They have now been completed, which also includes a sheltered terrace for aprox 100 spectators,
The new season starts 2012/2013 on the 4th August and our first FLOODLIGHT match is Tuesday 7th August verses VCD. Not bad in one year."

There was action in both boxes before Cray did take the lead on 14 minutes. A free kick swung in from the right glanced off a City defender's head and was perfect for Bill Parkinson to bullet an unchallenged header past Mann. On 30 minutes. City equalised. A ball through to Kane Rice found Ascheri who battled to cross the ball and via two deflections it came through to Waugh who slid the ball past the Cray keeper Jack Carthy. On 44 minutes Cray re-established their lead. Conteh went down the right for Cray, cut inside shrugging off a defender and fired across Mann into the far corner. The equaliser came on 59 minutes. Waugh knocked a long ball on for Richard Atkins to chase, he ran on, beat the defender, went through a tackle and rounded the keeper to make it 2-2.

Cray Valley: Manning, Healy, Golding, Matthews, Gross, Aderonmu, Miller (capt), Allen (Guard), Bryant (Dolby), Tanner, Smale. Unused subs: Hunt, Sawyer, Prall.

Despite four enforced changes from the side that defeated League leaders Erith Town the previous week, a disciplined display by Cray was rewarded with three well deserved points against third placed Rochester.
With Bill Parkinson (Hamstring), Steve Springett (Flu), Kevin Lott (Dislocated shoulder) and Chris McGinty (England duty!) all unavailable, Millers manager Steve Chapman took the opportunity to give debuts to new signings Paul Gross and Jay Smale following their move from VCD. James Golding returned to the side at right back with the versatile Ben Healy switching to the left side and Robbie Bryant came in got the unfortunate Kevin Lott who was outstanding the previouss week until injury struck.
Gross demonstrated exactly why Chapman was so keen to secure his services with an assured performance along side the equally impressive Joe Matthews. The home side fielded a strong side including the League's top scorer Staurt Zanone but he was marshalled brilliantly by Gross and Matthews, who restricted him to a few half chances all afternoon.
Up front Smale partnered Luke Tanner and their ability to run at defenders provided an effective outlet as the Millers absorbed most of the first half pressure with keeper Neale Manning not having to make a save. The breakthrough came in the 40th minute when Tanner found some space in the box and as the ball broke loose Tunde Aderonmu was on hand to drive the ball home past keeper Joe Hagan from close range. Smale almost doubled the lead before the interval but his deflected shot crashed against the bar and away to safety.
It was a game of few opportunities at either end and although Smale forced a fine save from the Rochester keeper and the home side hit the upright, there wasn't another goal until the final minute. Whilst retaining possession deep in the Rochester half, Tanner was crudely fouled just inside the area by defender Ashley Cooper and Matthews stepped up to slot home the resulting penalty kick. The win pushed Cray up to 7th in the table but only two points away from their opponents who remained in 3rd place.

Cray Valley (PM), nearing the end of their second season in the Kent League, stunned visitors Beckenham Town with two very late goals to salvage an unlikely point. The visitors looked set to take home all three points with a first-half own goal netted by Sam Gent and a super strike from Alfie Nunn. Then with time running out, Luke Tanner pulled a goal back for Cray in the 90th minute before Gent made amends for his earlier own goal with a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time. The Middle Park Avenue ground has been significant upgraded over the past couple of years with two new stands erected and floodlights installed.
